First off let me say that I, ( Josh Salas) am not a certified mechanic or technician*.  I do however have about 10 years of mechanic experience working on my own cars and those of friends and family. The last 2.5 years have been all with Land Rovers.

In those 2.5 years in the Land Rover community I have been able to create helpful write-ups and with resources like the Land Rover RAVE Workshop Manual, the Land Rover Microcat Parts Catalog and the online forum community, I have been able to service, repair, maintain and modify Land Rovers here on St. Croix, USVI.

Many components of Land Rovers are quite simple and straight forward, while some are very unique and temperamental, such as the ABS/TC/HDC.

Rovers need Preventive Maintenance?

Picture
In my opinion there is a mentality amongst few Rover owners that because Land Rovers have gone to the farthest corners of the Earth and back, they only need fuel and they are good to go.

WRONG! These cars absolutely need PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE; Premium fuel, and "on schedule" service maintenance.

When and Where I work

Having a full time job only gives me time to work on weekends and I work out of my car port at home.

How I Work

First, I ask a few simple questions to know the general service history of your vehicle, such as:
  1. What grade fuel have you been running and for how long?
  2. At what intervals have your oil changes been done at?
  3. What oil type, oil brand, and oil filter have been used?
  4. When was the last time any fluids have been changed? (i.e. Coolant, Brake Fluid, Power steering, Axle Fluid, Transfer-Case Fluid, Transmission Fluid)
  5. What brand of spark plugs and spark plug wires do you use and when was the last time they were replaced?
  6. Who serviced your vehicle last and what was done?

Second, we discuss your Rover's actual condition and symptoms. Even if it's only an intermittent window issue, I will ask all of the above. I take an initial visual inspection and give you my thoughts and recommendations.

Lastly, I work alone and methodically.  If I can't, I will be honest and tell you why I can't do it.  I double-check my work and  follow up with you to get updates on the status of your Rover. I quite often consult with retired and active Land Rover experts and technicians from the U.S. mainland. I do my best to explain everything I recommend so that you can understand and feel assured that I have my best interests for the health of your 4x4.
